TANGANYIKA: P‑DDRCS WELCOMES THE IMMINENT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE “MADINI KWA AMANI NA MAENDELEO” PROJECT IN THE PROVINCE

Kalemie, November 21, 2025. The Tanganyika focal point of the P‑DDRCS, Trésor Ngabo, met with a delegation from the NGO Alert International, led by Project Director Christof Kurz, to discuss the extension of the “Madini Kwa Amani na Maendeleo” initiative—translated as “Minerals for Peace and Development”—to Tanganyika Province.

According to Mr. Kurz, the project’s expansion is being considered due to persistent instability and limited access in its usual intervention zones in North and South Kivu, caused by the occupation of territories by the M23/AFC rebellion. The extension to Tanganyika responds to serious challenges in the artisanal mining sector, including child labor, illicit exploitation, and practices that fuel insecurity and severe human rights violations.

Welcoming the initiative, Trésor Ngabo emphasized that mining governance is a critical component of stabilization (segment 13 of the P‑DDRCS national strategy), complementing efforts to combat the financing of armed groups (segment 9). The project aims to ensure that artisanal mining contributes meaningfully to local stability and development.

The initiative actively promotes the application of the “Blue Status” under the Regional Certification Mechanism (RCM), established by the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). Certification work aligns directly with the P‑DDRCS strategy and the broader national agenda, which prioritizes collaboration with regional partners to improve governance in the mining sector.

Following the certification of 22 sites in South Kivu, Phase II of the project will focus on capacity transfer and training of Technical Risk Assessment Experts. This training is crucial for the effective extension of the certification system to Tanganyika, with the ultimate goal of transforming artisanal mining into a driver of sustainable development.
